Staying Healthy During the Winter

Post

It’s important to consider our chances of encountering viruses like flu, COVID-19, and RSV. To avoid the possibility of missing important gatherings due to respiratory illness this winter, consider protection options against these viruses.

Vaccines can help defend against severe illness and potential hospitalization. Anyone 6 months and older is eligible to receive the updated flu and COVID-19 vaccine, which can be completed in the same appointment. To schedule your vaccine appointment, visit MyTurn.ca.gov with your local pharmacy or health care provider.

RSV immunization is available for adults ages 60+, pregnant individuals, infants and some toddlers. Unfortunately, there is currently a nationwide shortage of RSV immunization (Beyfortus) for infants and toddlers. However, people who are between 32-36 weeks pregnant can receive the RSV vaccine to pass protection to their baby. Consult with your health care provider to check whether or not you are eligible for this vaccine and to learn more about availability.

Some tips to follow for the upcoming winter months to avoid the spread of respiratory illness:

  • Stay home if you’re sick
  • Cover your coughs and sneezes
  • Consider wearing a mask in indoor public places, especially while traveling or in crowded settings
  • Wash your hands frequently and thoroughly

If you feel sick, consider flu and COVID-19 testing ASAP and contact your primary health care provider to learn about possible medications (if needed).
