Overcoming Homelessness

Post

Robert was determined eligible for regional center services in 1990 but didn’t access them due to a “wild youth” when he struggled with addiction and negative influences from friends. On a path that was wrong for him, it led him to being homeless for 10 years. Prior to being homeless, Robert lived with his mother, but she unfortunately passed away two years ago while living in a skilled nursing facility. But now, at 62 years old, Robert is housed and enjoys living in a care home.

At a park in Carmichael, Robert was approached by a Client Services Manager (who was off-duty at the time) and asked if he knew about the regional center. At first, he didn’t understand the question but was open to more information. With further investigation, his inactive case was found and reactivated. In two weeks, he was placed in a care home in time for the holidays. Robert works with an Independent Living Skills employee from Clear Skies Solutions currently and is in the process of getting Supplemental Security Income and Medi-Cal reinstated.

As he continues to improve his life, Robert looks forward to starting a day program or getting a job in the new year. In the meantime, Robert enjoys watching baseball and football, reading, biking, hiking, and gardening. Seeing how much his life has improved, Robert shared that his mother would be proud of him. He keeps his mother’s ashes with him and sports a tattoo of her name on his shoulder to honor her.
