Nina

Practitioner of Taekwondo

Post

Nina has a big social life! She began gymnastics at about 4 years old, practices piano, and does taekwondo. As a junior in high school, Nina loves to interact with others and share all the fun things she enjoys doing.

Two years ago, Nina and her parents began taking taekwondo lessons together with assistance from Alta California Regional Center social recreation funding. Nina’s parents shared how their Service Coordinator had opened so many doors for them, providing them with resources they didn’t know existed. It has made Nina’s development transcend their original expectations. Nina has many interests, and with additional support, Nina can pursue the hobbies she is passionate about.

As a Japanese American, Nina loves to eat Japanese food and is in the process of learning the language. She has traveled to Japan nine times with her mother and enjoys hanging out with her extended family. Nina enjoys sharing photos of her family and the experiences she had while traveling.

Having a routine really helps Nina excel. She attends taekwondo twice a week, consistently practicing for two years, which has led to her graduating to a camo belt. She participates in gymnastics three times weekly and was elected to be a team member, awarding her a uniform and the opportunity to compete. Nina also has played piano since she was about 15 years old. At 16, Nina has a full plate and only wants to do more! She even created an Instagram page where she shares videos of her dancing. Having Down Syndrome hasn’t stopped Nina from doing things that excite her, and it makes her feel proud.

As she continues to develop and grow, Nina hopes to attend the University of California – Davis Redwood SEED Program. The program gives accepted students a full-time opportunity to be supported with peer mentors in academics, social inclusion, health and wellness, residential living and employment. Nina has no intent of slowing down and plans to keep thriving!
