Kimaya

Kimaya has been infatuated with languages and culture since she was about five years old. She enjoys using online resources like YouTube to learn the basics. So far, she has learned how to say “hello” in over 50 languages including Chinese, French, Japanese, Spanish, German, Arabic, Russian, Vietnamese, and more! But her love of learning doesn’t stop at languages; she enjoys immersing herself in culture and history of other countries.

Learning about culture and languages also introduced Kimaya to different mythologies. Specifically Japanese mythology called yokai and American mythology called cryptids. Yokai are a class of supernatural entities in Japanese folklore, and they can be helpful, mischievous, or malevolent. In contrast, the American cryptids are animals or beings whose existence is unproven, often rooted in folklore, eyewitness reports, and popular culture. Examples include Big Foot and the Jersey Devil.

Kimaya’s interest in yokai led her to the anime Yo-Kai Watch and to the world of anime in general. When she and her family traveled to Japan, she was very excited to experience the culture and see the birthplace of anime, along with enjoying all the attractions.

Her love for anime pairs well with her love of drawing. Kimaya has shown her artistic talent since she was about five years old. In fact, she recently created a 50-character design of figures inspired by each of the 50 states! They featured specific colors or details that were fundamental pieces to each state.

Living in a blended family has given Kimaya a unique cultural background. As a Mexican, Irish, African, American, and Scandinavian person, Kimaya enjoys experiencing all facets of her background. She even hand crafted a family tree that features pictures of her loved ones and framed for display. Kimaya particularly feels aligned with her Mexican heritage, and enjoys celebrating Day of the Dead, a holiday to remember friends and family who have died and passed into the afterlife.

As Kimaya enters her sophomore year of high school, she is excited to continue learning about cultures, languages, and joining an anime club! She wishes to travel more to continue to immerse herself in what the world has to offer.
