ACRC Expands Meta Smart Glasses Pilot

Alta California Regional Center is expanding its innovative pilot exploring how Meta smart glasses can support greater independence for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

During the initial pilot with Odyssey Learning Center, participants used the glasses while completing workplace activities and everyday tasks. The hands-free technology provided access to visual information, reminders, communication tools, and real-time assistance without requiring the person to stop what they were doing or use a separate device.

The next phase will build on these early results by including additional participants, service providers, and employment settings. It will also examine how smart glasses can offer remote supports that complement the in-person support provided by direct support professionals and job coaches. The technology is not intended to replace personal support. Instead, it may give people another tool to complete tasks, build confidence, and rely less on direct prompting.

The expansion reflects ACRC’s continued commitment to assistive technology, person-centered services, and meaningful community partnerships. By working closely with people receiving services, families, providers, employers, and technology partners, ACRC is helping develop practical solutions that promote employment, independence, and full participation in the community.
